About

For its second “carte blanche” exhibition, the Musée d’art et d’histoire has invited Jean-Hubert Martin, a famous exhibition designer who has been making his mark on the field of art for more than four decades, to take a fresh look at his collection. By diving into the MAH’s archives, this great art historian and museum man takes us on a journey. Through more than 800 works from all artistic and historical fields, the public is encouraged to observe, feel and appropriate what is our common treasure, namely the fascinating diversity of the collection. Through play, switching or analogy, some of the museum’s best-known works enter into a simple and uncomplicated dialogue with singular objects that sometimes escape our attention. The tour restores our confidence in our emotional strength. The museum reveals itself in a new light and becomes the theatre of our desires.
This catalog includes an essay by Jean-Hubert Martin, who details his vision, a discussion between the curator and the director of the MAH, Marc-Olivier Wahler, an essay by critic and art history professor Maura Reilly, and images, combining shots of the rooms and a selection of works and objects.
From a graphic-editorial point of view, the design of the publication follows the corporate design guidelines on the one hand, but also uses new visual expressions and dramaturgical tricks with the use of mah-sans. The design concept underlines the attitude of the exhibition, and makes references among the artefacts visible, accessible and at the same time reveals unexpected, new references, which could be optimally supplemented with information in the medium of the book and thus unfold into a new universe…
